Happy Friday! Before we dive in to the harder news, please join me in enjoying this story about scientists dosing a shy breed of octopus with ecstasy to see if the animal became cuddly and friendly while high. (I swear, it relates to health care: More studies are evaluating psychedelic drugs as outside-the-box treatments, especially for post-traumatic stress disorder in veterans.)
We also had successful dives with the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). As we watch the live feed of the video, we are not only looking for the conspicuous structures of deep sea corals and sponges, but we are also looking for other marine life hiding in the background. Underneath one of the sponges, I saw some unusual coloration, and asked the ROV pilot to take a closer look. Low and behold, we saw tentacles with suction cups wrapped around the base, revealing itself to be an octopus. The closer we look beyond the magnificence of these undersea living structures of corals and sponges, the more we learn how important they are in the fabric of an ecosystem we are only beginning to understand.
There was lots of PR buzz this week surrounding the fact that Microsoft Cortana accurately predicted the results of 15 out of 16 World Cup matches. That's great. But Paul the Octopus managed 12 out of 14, which statistically, ain't that far off. Perhaps the real value of big data analytics is only marginally better than a psychic octopus," he notes.
